Sad news from Koala Territory
Posted 18 Oct 2023 in Edinburgh Zoo
We are sad to share the loss of Tanami, our male koala. Tanami, who was six-years-old, was suffering with cancer which had spread throughout his body and was impacting his quality of life. Our charity’s expert vets recommended he be put to sleep to prevent further suffering.
Many people will know Tanami from the zoo’s webcams, which were a huge hit over lockdown, allowing the public to connect with nature and keep up-to-date with some of our animals while the zoo was closed.
Tanami was an important koala within the European breeding programme for the species, fathering three joeys - Inala, Myaree and Dameeli. His daughters Inala and Myaree are still here at the zoo, while Dameeli left for Pairi Daiza last year.
